Choosing the Right People Matters
Building MNK Suites has taught me that the vision is only one part of the process. The other part is making sure the right people are helping bring that vision to life.
When you are new to commercial build-outs, property management, contractors, pricing, permits, timelines, and construction decisions, it can feel overwhelming. But being new does not mean you have to be naive.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned is the importance of doing your research before choosing a general contractor, property manager, or vendor. It is not enough to go with the first referral or the person who sounds good on the phone. You have to:
take your time
ask questions
check references
review previous work
compare pricing
make sure there are no legal or professional concerns that could affect your project.
A good contractor should be able to explain their process, provide realistic timelines, communicate clearly, and stand behind the quality of their work. The same goes for property managers and vendors. When you are building something from the ground up, every decision matters — from the lighting, flooring, and floor plan to the plumbing, finishes, and overall functionality of the space.
There will be headaches. There will be delays. There will be moments where you have to follow up again and again about pricing, milestones, materials, product selections, and timelines. That is part of the process. But those hurdles are much easier to manage when you are working with quality professionals who respect your vision, your investment, and your business.
